The guy creating this song is (Wyclef Jean)  a Haitian American. Being from Haiti which is one of the most impoverished countries in the world and living in rough neighbourhoods in America; he would have seen incredible things  desperate men and women would do to get money and get out from where they are.  With that context, the song seems more poignant. To me anyway.
